Welcome to the Plastic Litter Project 2023!
We’re thrilled to embark on this small-scale project that focuses on tackling floating marine litter. Our mission for the year is to construct and deploy smaller-area targets, ranging from 1 to 3 square meters, to explore the potential of using high-resolution satellites like the Super Dove constellation from Planet. This will help us detect even low concentrations of floating marine litter, particularly in the beautiful Mediterranean coastal waters.
To ensure comprehensive assessments, we’ll deploy targets made of both plastic and natural materials. By doing so, we can evaluate our ability to differentiate between different types of litter. Our initial reference target material will be a white HDPE tarp, but we have exciting plans to incorporate various floating marine litter materials in the subsequent phases of our experiment.
Once again, the stunning Gulf of Gera, near Skala Loutron, will serve as the perfect location for our project’s permanent buoy infrastructure.
Thank you for joining us on this journey to protect our oceans and create a cleaner, healthier environment.
Together, we can make a positive impact on our coastal ecosystems and inspire others to join the fight against plastic pollution!
